59th Commencement 2024

I was counting down the days until June 18th!

As the day had quickly approached, I counted my blessings and could not wait for the commencement ceremony. Many hard years I’ve worked hard to gain the knowledge and skills needed to make it to this point. Completing the first two years at Kingsborough has been another major accomplishment in my life. I didn’t walk across the stage in high school because I dropped out, but I couldn’t wait to walk and march here at Kingsborough community college. Sadly, we weren’t able to walk across the stage, but we were able to walk down the aisle and have our photos taken next to other successful leaders and staff at KKC.

Most graduates arrived at the requested time, and many of us gathers in the S building prior to the meeting time. The sounds of laughter and chatter filled the room, and the positive energies were flowing through the atmosphere. Although it was hot and we all were baking like clams under out gowns, everyone was so excited and filled with glee. As I maneuvered through the crowds of graduates that sat alone and others with their friends I glanced at faces and expressions. I admired decorated Caps and phrases on them, occasionally stopping to help fix the sashes on other graduates I noticed had shifted or folded. I continued to walk down the hall with my head held high, listening and watching, smiling and also taking as many selfies as I possibly could in any all areas of the S building.

I couldn’t help but wonder who was majoring in what as I stood and waited for the time to pass. Man was it hot out and only getting hotter by the minute. Forecast had read about 80s that day. I remember, the day before had nice gusts of wind, but this day not so much. The time quickly approached for us to line up, Liberal Arts and Criminal Justice on one side and Honors & All other Majors on the other side. I could not stop smiling at all of the successful people I was surround by. Knowing how many others were out there of all ages thriving and working hard never giving up towards their goals and accomplishing them.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

The heat and the long wait in the sun. I strongly feel that we all could have begun the line up inside the S building and had it trail off towards the back of the S building. It was so hot and uncomfortable waiting to begin the march. There were also some confusions on what to do and where to go for some graduates.

Not being able to walk across the stage. This was unexpected for me, and sad, because I and I also overheard a few others, where looking forward to walking across the stage, as our names were being called. Instead, our names were read aloud, and we took a quick photo and walked down the aisle back to our seats.
